Hostel Review – Brisbane City Backpacker’s | Brisbane, Australia

Brisbane City Backpackers

Sum it up: Super social and fun vibe located among a row of hostels with great view of the skyline and river.

My length of visit (for your reference): 1 night

Cost: $21 AUD ($16.80 USD)/night for a 16 person dorm (I got upgraded to a 4 person dorm with a brand new bed since they overbooked the 16 dorm – score!)

Hostel Basics:

  • WiFi: Yes, in the common areas.
  • Breakfast: No.
  • Guest-Use Kitchen: A MASSIVE one. Need to get a kit of dishes from reception.
  • Bar/Kitchen: Yes. I didn’t try the food, but the bar was poppin’! Super fun – there’s a tiny pool table, great drink prices (for Australia at least), and I was there on trivia night, which was quite fun. Bar is indoors, but the crowd flows out on to the massive deck with view of the river. In fact, many of the people I chatted with were from other hostels on the same street because theirs didn’t have anything fun.
  • BYO: No.

Location: Sits in a row of ~4 hostels, super close to the train station.

The row of hostels sits between the sports arena and the main downtown area. I was not in Brissy long enough to get a feel for how close it is to the attractions, but I found it quite easy to get to and from (since I took a train from Gold Coast into Brissy, then the train to the airport). The city is quite walkable and the location near the transit center makes it easy to get to the suburbs in a jiff. There is a Cole’s (grocery store) across the street and convenience stores nearby.

Airport Transfers: No. But it’s about a 10 minute walk from the major transport center where all the trains/busses arrive.

Hostel Overview: Would you go back? Yes!!

I was there for just a short stay, but really enjoyed the vibe. The bar and atmosphere felt social without being overly party-party-party. The room was quite spacious, for a 4 person dorm. Outlets were scarce. Plenty of shower and bathroom space for everyone. Lots of levels, so though there were a lot of people there, they were spread out amongst the different decks and pool area. Additionally, the view from the rooftop was killer! Can’t beat an easy walk to/from transportation.

Need to Know: Even though it’s quite close to the transport center, the transport center is not very close to the airport – plan enough time to get to the train and take the train in (good news, the train drops you right at the domestic and international terminals).

Pros/Cons: Fun, social vibe packed nicely into multiple levels; didn’t stay there long enough!
